Typically, a mildly acid flavour, light-bodied but tasteful & aromatic. Peru coffee are thought of as a good blending coffee because of its pleasant but understated characteristics. The Cuzco region, especially the Urubamba Valley, also cultivates renound wet-processed coffee. The best level is AAA.
Peruvian beans may be a dark roast but does not need to be. Light or dark roast depends on the coffee bean roaster after the coffee has been farmed. Peruvian coffee is suited to both light & dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is partly due to the farming location and in part impactged from the way a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this category. The coffees that are less in acidity, such as Sumatran, are farmed at lower altitudes.
Both coffee beans show a simple yet balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian beans.
Arabica is the dominant coffee grown:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica strain which is a tall and leggy low yield tree but provides high qualities, generally quite sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee strain that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the remainder being of other varieties.
About 75 percent of the coffee cultivating area is at an elevation range of 1,000 to 1,800 m.
