Typically, a mildly acid taste, light bodied but tasteful and aromatic. Peru beans are known as a good blending coffee because of its nice but understated character. The Cuzco area, particularly the Urubamba Valley, also grows respected wet-processed coffee. The highest grade is AAA.
Peru beans may be a dark roast but do not need to be. Light or dark roast is dependent on the coffee bean roaster after the coffee has been farmed. Peruvian coffee is well matched to both light and dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is partly due to the farming region and partly impactged by the method a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this type. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatran, are grown at lower altitudes.
Both coffee beans exhibit a simple & balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee.
Arabica is the primary coffee grown:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica strain that is a tall & leggy small yield tree but provides excellent qualities, generally quite sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee plant that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the remainder being of other types.
About 75 percent of the coffee cultivating area lies at an altitude range of 1,000–1,800 metres.
