Usually, a mildly acid coffee, light bodied but tasteful & aromatic. Peru are considered a good blending coffee due to its nice but understated attributes. The Cuzco region, especially the Urubamba Valley, also cultivates respected wet-processed coffee. The highest level is AAA.
Peruvian beans may be a darker roast but does not need to be. lighter or darker roast is dependent on the bean roasting after the coffee has been produced. Peruvian coffee is suited to both lighter and darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is partly due to the farming location and in part influenced by the way a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this category. The coffees that are less in acidity, such as Sumatra, are farmed at lower elevations.
Both coffee beans exhibit a simple & balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian beans.
Arabica is the primary coffee grown:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica strain that is a tall & leggy low yield tree but produces high qualities, typically very sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee variety that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the remainder are other types.
About 75 percent of the coffee growing area lies at an elevation range of 1000–1,800 m.
