Usually, it is a mildly acid taste, light-bodied but flavourful & aromatic. Peruvian coffee beans are known as a good blending coffee owing to its pleasant but understated character. The Cuzco region, particularly the Urubamba Valley, also grows renound wet-processed coffee. The highest grade is AAA.
Peru beans may be a darker roast but do not need to be. Light or dark roast is dependent on the coffee bean roaster after the coffee has been farmed. Peruvian coffee is suited to both lighter and darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is in part due to the growing location & partly impactged by the method a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this type. The coffees that are lower in acidity, such as Sumatra, are cultivated at lower altitudes.
Both coffee beans have a simple and balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee.
Arabica is the largest coffee farmed:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica variety which is a tall & leggy low yield plant but produces excellent qualities, typically quite sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee tree that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever discovered); and
- the rest being of other varieties.
About 75% of the coffee growing area is at an elevation range of 1000 to 1,800 metres.
