Usually, a mildly acid cup, light bodied but flavourful & aromatic. Peru coffee beans are known as a good blending coffee due to its pleasant but understated attributes. The Cuzco area, especially the Urubamba Valley, also cultivates respected wet-processed coffee. The best grade is AAA.
Peru coffee can be a darker roast but do not need to be. lighter or darker roast depends on the bean roasting after the coffee has been grown. Peruvian coffee is suited to both lighter & darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is in part due to the growing area & partly influenced from the method a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this type. The coffees that are lower in acidity, such as Sumatra, are grown at lower elevations.
Both beans show a simple yet balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee beans.
Arabica is the predominant coffee crop:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type that is a tall & leggy low yield plant but produces high qualities, generally quite sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee variety that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the rest being of other types.
About 75% of the coffee cultivating area lies at an elevation range of 1,000–1800 metres.
