Typically, it is a mildly acid coffee, light-bodied but tasteful & aromatic. Peru beans are thought of as a good blender because of its nice but understated attributes. The Cuzco area, especially the Urubamba Valley, also grows respected wet-processed coffee. The highest level is AAA.
Peru coffee beans can be a darker roast but does not need to be. Light or dark roast depends on the coffee roaster after the coffee has been farmed. Peruvian coffee is suited to both lighter & darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is as a result of the farming region & partly influenced by the method a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this type. The coffees that are lower in acidity, such as Sumatra, are farmed at lower elevations.
Both coffees exhibit a simple & balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity and lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee.
Arabica is the primary coffee grown:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica strain that is a tall & leggy small yield plant but provides great qualities, usually very sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee plant that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the rest being of other types.
About 75% of the coffee cultivating area lies at an altitude range of 1000–1,800 m.
