Typically, it is a mildly acid coffee, light bodied but flavourful & aromatic. Peruvian beans are considered a good blending coffee because of its pleasant but understated attributes. The Cuzco region, especially the Urubamba Valley, also grows renound wet-processed coffee. The highest level is AAA.
Peruvian coffee beans can be a darker roast but do not need to be. lighter or darker roast depends on the coffee bean roaster after the coffee has been farmed. Peruvian coffee is suited to both light and dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is partly due to the farming area & in part impactged from the method a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this type. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatra, are produced at lower elevations.
Both coffee beans have a simple & balanced flavour. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee.
Arabica is the dominant coffee crop:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica strain which is a tall & leggy low yield plant but provides high qualities, generally very sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee tree that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the remainder are other types.
About 75% of the coffee cultivating area is at an altitude range of 1,000–1,800 m.
