Generally, a mildly acid taste, light bodied but tasteful and aromatic. Peru coffee beans are known as a good blending coffee due to its nice but understated character. The Cuzco area, especially the Urubamba Valley, also produces renound wet-processed coffee. The highest grade is AAA.
Peruvian beans may be a darker roast but do not need to be. lighter or darker roast depends on the coffee bean roasting after the coffee has been grown. Peruvian coffee is suited to both light and dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is because of the farming location and in part influenced from the way a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this category. The coffees that are less in acidity, such as Sumatran, are grown at lower altitudes.
Both coffees exhibit a simple and balanced flavour. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee beans.
Arabica is the predominant coffee farmed:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica strain that is a tall and leggy small yield tree but produces high qualities, generally very sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee tree that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the rest being of other types.
About 75 percent of the coffee cultivating area is at an altitude range of 1,000–1,800 metres.
