Usually, a mildly acid coffee, light-bodied but flavourful & aromatic. Peru coffee are known as a good blending coffee owing to its pleasant but understated character. The Cuzco region, particularly the Urubamba Valley, also cultivates renound wet-processed coffee. The highest grade is AAA.
Peru coffee beans may be a darker roast but does not need to be. lighter or darker roast is dependent on the coffee bean roasting after the coffee has been produced. Peruvian coffee is suited to both light and dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is as a result of the farming area & in part influenced from the method a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this type. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatran, are farmed at lower altitudes.
Both coffee beans have a simple and balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee beans.
Arabica is the primary coffee crop:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type which is a tall and leggy small yield shrub but provides high qualities, generally very sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee variety that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever discovered); and
- the rest are other varieties.
About 75% of the coffee farming area lies at an elevation range of 1,000 to 1800 m.
