Typically, it is a mildly acid taste, light-bodied but tasteful and aromatic. Peruvian coffee beans are considered a good blending coffee because of its pleasant but understated attributes. The Cuzco region, especially the Urubamba Valley, also produces respected wet-processed coffee. The best grade is AAA.
Peru coffee may be a darker roast but does not need to be. Light or dark roast is dependent on the coffee roasting after the coffee has been grown. Peruvian coffee is well matched to both light & dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is because of the cultivating area and partly influenced from the method a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this category. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatran, are farmed at lower altitudes.
Both coffees show a simple yet balanced flavour. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee beans.
Arabica is the predominant coffee crop:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type that is a tall and leggy small yield plant but produces excellent qualities, usually very sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee plant that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the remainder are other types.
About 75% of the coffee growing area lies at an elevation range of 1000–1,800 metres.
