Typically, a mildly acid coffee, light bodied but flavourful and aromatic. Peru beans are known as a good blender owing to its pleasant but understated characteristics. The Cuzco area, especially the Urubamba Valley, also cultivates respected wet-processed coffee. The best grade is AAA.
Peruvian coffee may be a dark roast but do not need to be. lighter or darker roast depends on the bean roasting after the coffee has been produced. Peruvian coffee is well matched to both lighter and darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is because of the cultivating area & in part impactged by the method a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this type. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatran, are cultivated at lower elevations.
Both coffees show a simple and balanced flavour. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity and does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian beans.
Arabica is the predominant coffee cultured:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica variety which is a tall and leggy low yield tree but produces high qualities, typically very sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee strain that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever discovered); and
- the remainder are other types.
About 75 percent of the coffee cultivation area is at an elevation range of 1,000–1800 m.
