Usually, a mildly acid coffee, light-bodied but flavourful and aromatic. Peru coffee are considered a good blending coffee owing to its pleasant but understated character. The Cuzco area, particularly the Urubamba Valley, also cultivates renound wet-processed coffee. The best grade is AAA.
Peru beans can be a darker roast but does not need to be. Light or dark roast depends on the bean roaster after the coffee has been farmed. Peruvian coffee is suited to both lighter and darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is because of the cultivating location & partly influenced from the way a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this type. The coffees that are lower in acidity, such as Sumatran, are farmed at lower elevations.
Both coffees exhibit a simple and balanced flavour. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee.
Arabica is the largest coffee cultured:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type which is a tall & leggy low yield plant but produces excellent qualities, usually quite sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee plant that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever discovered); and
- the rest being of other varieties.
About 75 percent of the coffee cultivating area is at an elevation range of 1,000 to 1800 metres.
