Typically, a mildly acid coffee, light bodied but tasteful & aromatic. Peru coffee beans are known as a good blending coffee due to its pleasant but understated characteristics. The Cuzco region, particularly the Urubamba Valley, also grows renound wet-processed coffee. The highest grade is AAA.
Peruvian coffee can be a darker roast but does not need to be. lighter or darker roast depends on the coffee roaster after the coffee has been produced. Peruvian coffee is well matched to both light and dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is in part due to the farming region & partly influenced from the way a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this category. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatra, are cultivated at lower altitudes.
Both beans exhibit a simple yet balanced flavour. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity and lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian beans.
Arabica is the dominant coffee crop:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type which is a tall & leggy small yield shrub but provides high qualities, generally very sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee plant that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever discovered); and
- the remainder being of other types.
About 75% of the coffee cultivating area lies at an elevation range of 1,000–1,800 metres.
