Typically, a mildly acid taste, light bodied but flavourful & aromatic. Peruvian coffee beans are known as a good blending coffee due to its nice but understated characteristics. The Cuzco area, especially the Urubamba Valley, also cultivates respected wet-processed coffee. The best grade is AAA.
Peruvian beans may be a darker roast but do not need to be. Light or dark roast depends on the coffee roaster after the coffee has been farmed. Peruvian coffee is suited to both light and dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is as a result of the cultivating region and partly influenced by the way a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this category. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatra, are cultivated at lower altitudes.
Both coffees show a simple & balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity and lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee.
Arabica is the largest coffee crop:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type that is a tall and leggy small yield plant but provides high qualities, typically very sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee plant that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the rest being of other types.
About 75% of the coffee cultivating area lies at an elevation range of 1000 to 1,800 metres.
