Typically, it is a mildly acid coffee, light bodied but flavourful & aromatic. Peru are considered a good blender owing to its pleasant but understated character. The Cuzco region, especially the Urubamba Valley, also cultivates renound wet-processed coffee. The best grade is AAA.
Peruvian beans may be a darker roast but does not need to be. Light or dark roast is dependent on the coffee bean roasting after the coffee has been farmed. Peruvian coffee is suited to both light & dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is as a result of the growing location & in part impactged from the method a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this category. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatra, are produced at lower elevations.
Both coffees exhibit a simple & balanced flavour. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee beans.
Arabica is the largest coffee crop:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type that is a tall and leggy low yield plant but provides excellent qualities, typically quite sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee plant that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the rest being of other varieties.
About 75 percent of the coffee farming area lies at an altitude range of 1000–1800 metres.
