Usually, a mildly acid coffee, light-bodied but tasteful & aromatic. Peru coffee beans are known as a good blender owing to its nice but understated characteristics. The Cuzco location, particularly the Urubamba Valley, also produces respected wet-processed coffee. The best level is AAA.
Peruvian beans can be a dark roast but do not need to be. Light or dark roast is dependent on the coffee bean roasting after the coffee has been grown. Peruvian coffee is well matched to both lighter and darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is partly due to the cultivating area and partly influenced from the way a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this type. The coffees that are less in acidity, such as Sumatra, are grown at lower elevations.
Both coffees have a simple & balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee beans.
Arabica is the largest coffee crop:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type that is a tall and leggy small yield plant but provides high qualities, usually very sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee tree that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the rest are other varieties.
About 75% of the coffee growing area lies at an altitude range of 1000 to 1800 metres.
