Usually, it is a mildly acid coffee, light-bodied but flavourful and aromatic. Peruvian coffee beans are known as a good blender owing to its nice but understated character. The Cuzco region, especially the Urubamba Valley, also produces respected wet-processed coffee. The best level is AAA.
Peru coffee beans can be a dark roast but do not need to be. lighter or darker roast is dependent on the coffee roaster after the coffee has been farmed. Peruvian coffee is well matched to both lighter and darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is as a result of the farming region & partly impactged from the way a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this category. The coffees that are less in acidity, such as Sumatra, are grown at lower altitudes.
Both coffee beans show a simple & balanced flavour. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity and does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee.
Arabica is the dominant coffee crop:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica strain which is a tall and leggy low yield plant but provides high qualities, usually quite sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee tree that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever discovered); and
- the rest are other types.
About 75% of the coffee growing area is at an altitude range of 1,000–1,800 metres.
