Typically, a mildly acid taste, light bodied but tasteful & aromatic. Peruvian beans are considered a good blending coffee owing to its pleasant but understated character. The Cuzco region, particularly the Urubamba Valley, also grows renound wet-processed coffee. The best grade is AAA.
Peru beans can be a dark roast but does not need to be. lighter or darker roast depends on the bean roasting after the coffee has been farmed. Peruvian coffee is well matched to both light & dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is as a result of the growing location and partly influenced by the method a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this category. The coffees that are lower in acidity, such as Sumatran, are produced at lower elevations.
Both coffees show a simple & balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity and lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee beans.
Arabica is the dominant coffee farmed:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica strain which is a tall & leggy small yield tree but produces great qualities, generally quite sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee plant that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever discovered); and
- the rest are other types.
About 75% of the coffee cultivating area lies at an elevation range of 1000–1,800 m.
