Typically, a mildly acid coffee, light-bodied but tasteful and aromatic. Peru are known as a good blending coffee because of its pleasant but understated character. The Cuzco location, particularly the Urubamba Valley, also produces respected wet-processed coffee. The best grade is AAA.
Peruvian coffee beans may be a dark roast but do not need to be. lighter or darker roast is dependent on the coffee roasting after the coffee has been farmed. Peruvian coffee is well matched to both lighter & darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is partly due to the cultivating region & in part impactged from the method a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this category. The coffees that are less in acidity, such as Sumatra, are farmed at lower altitudes.
Both beans have a simple & balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee beans.
Arabica is the predominant coffee grown:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type which is a tall & leggy small yield tree but provides excellent qualities, typically very sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee plant that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever discovered); and
- the rest are other types.
About 75% of the coffee growing area lies at an elevation range of 1000–1,800 metres.
