Generally, it is a mildly acid taste, light-bodied but tasteful and aromatic. Peruvian beans are thought of as a good blender because of its pleasant but understated character. The Cuzco area, especially the Urubamba Valley, also produces renound wet-processed coffee. The highest level is AAA.
Peru coffee beans can be a darker roast but does not need to be. Light or dark roast depends on the coffee bean roaster after the coffee has been produced. Peruvian coffee is suited to both light & dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is as a result of the growing region & in part influenced by the method a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this type. The coffees that are less in acidity, such as Sumatran, are farmed at lower elevations.
Both coffee beans have a simple and balanced flavour. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity and lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee beans.
Arabica is the primary coffee crop:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica strain that is a tall & leggy low yield tree but produces excellent qualities, generally very sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee plant that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the remainder being of other types.
About 75 percent of the coffee farming area lies at an altitude range of 1,000–1800 m.
