Usually, it is a mildly acid flavour, light bodied but tasteful & aromatic. Peruvian coffee beans are known as a good blender due to its nice but understated characteristics. The Cuzco location, especially the Urubamba Valley, also produces respected wet-processed coffee. The highest grade is AAA.
Peru coffee beans may be a darker roast but does not need to be. lighter or darker roast is dependent on the coffee roaster after the coffee has been produced. Peruvian coffee is suited to both lighter and darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is in part due to the farming region & partly influenced by the method a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this type. The coffees that are less in acidity, such as Sumatra, are farmed at lower elevations.
Both coffees exhibit a simple and balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian beans.
Arabica is the dominant coffee grown:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type that is a tall and leggy low yield shrub but provides high qualities, generally quite sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee variety that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the rest being of other varieties.
About 75 percent of the coffee cultivation area lies at an altitude range of 1000 to 1800 m.
