Usually, a mildly acid taste, light bodied but tasteful and aromatic. Peruvian coffee beans are thought of as a good blender owing to its pleasant but understated characteristics. The Cuzco area, particularly the Urubamba Valley, also grows respected wet-processed coffee. The best level is AAA.
Peruvian coffee may be a darker roast but do not need to be. lighter or darker roast is dependent on the coffee bean roaster after the coffee has been produced. Peruvian coffee is suited to both lighter & darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is in part due to the growing region and in part influenced from the method a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this category. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatra, are grown at lower elevations.
Both beans have a simple yet balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee beans.
Arabica is the predominant coffee crop:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica variety that is a tall and leggy low yield shrub but produces high qualities, usually quite sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee variety that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the remainder being of other varieties.
About 75% of the coffee cultivating area lies at an elevation range of 1000 to 1800 metres.
