Typically, it is a mildly acid coffee, light-bodied but tasteful & aromatic. Peru coffee beans are known as a good blending coffee owing to its pleasant but understated characteristics. The Cuzco region, especially the Urubamba Valley, also produces respected wet-processed coffee. The highest grade is AAA.
Peruvian beans can be a dark roast but does not need to be. Light or dark roast depends on the coffee roasting after the coffee has been produced. Peruvian coffee is well matched to both lighter and darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is in part due to the growing location and in part influenced from the method a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this type. The coffees that are less in acidity, such as Sumatran, are grown at lower altitudes.
Both beans have a simple yet balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity and does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee beans.
Arabica is the largest coffee farmed:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica strain which is a tall & leggy low yield plant but produces great qualities, typically very sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee strain that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever discovered); and
- the remainder are other varieties.
About 75% of the coffee cultivating area is at an altitude range of 1000–1800 metres.
