Typically, a mildly acid coffee, light bodied but tasteful & aromatic. Peru coffee are thought of as a good blender owing to its nice but understated characteristics. The Cuzco region, especially the Urubamba Valley, also cultivates renound wet-processed coffee. The highest grade is AAA.
Peru coffee can be a darker roast but does not need to be. Light or dark roast depends on the bean roaster after the coffee has been grown. Peruvian coffee is suited to both lighter & darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is partly due to the growing location & partly influenced by the method a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this category. The coffees that are less in acidity, such as Sumatra, are grown at lower altitudes.
Both coffee beans exhibit a simple yet balanced flavour. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity and lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian beans.
Arabica is the predominant coffee crop:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type which is a tall and leggy small yield shrub but provides great qualities, generally quite sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee plant that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever discovered); and
- the rest being of other varieties.
About 75 percent of the coffee farming area lies at an altitude range of 1000–1800 metres.
