Usually, it is a mildly acid coffee, light bodied but flavourful & aromatic. Peru coffee are thought of as a good blending coffee owing to its nice but understated characteristics. The Cuzco area, especially the Urubamba Valley, also cultivates respected wet-processed coffee. The best grade is AAA.
Peruvian beans can be a dark roast but does not need to be. lighter or darker roast is dependent on the bean roasting after the coffee has been grown. Peruvian coffee is well matched to both lighter and darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is in part due to the farming region and in part influenced by the method a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this category. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatra, are farmed at lower elevations.
Both coffee beans exhibit a simple yet balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee.
Arabica is the dominant coffee crop:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type which is a tall & leggy small yield plant but provides great qualities, typically very sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee strain that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever discovered); and
- the remainder are other types.
About 75% of the coffee farming area lies at an altitude range of 1,000–1800 m.
