Usually, it is a mildly acid flavour, light-bodied but tasteful & aromatic. Peruvian beans are known as a good blending coffee due to its pleasant but understated characteristics. The Cuzco region, particularly the Urubamba Valley, also cultivates respected wet-processed coffee. The best level is AAA.
Peru coffee beans may be a dark roast but does not need to be. Light or dark roast is dependent on the bean roasting after the coffee has been grown. Peruvian coffee is well matched to both light and dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is because of the farming area and in part impactged by the way a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this type. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatra, are produced at lower altitudes.
Both coffees show a simple & balanced flavour. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity and lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee.
Arabica is the largest coffee cultured:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica strain that is a tall & leggy low yield shrub but provides excellent qualities, usually quite sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee tree that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever discovered); and
- the remainder are other types.
About 75% of the coffee cultivation area lies at an elevation range of 1,000–1,800 metres.
