Typically, it is a mildly acid cup, light bodied but flavourful and aromatic. Peru are considered a good blending coffee because of its nice but understated characteristics. The Cuzco region, particularly the Urubamba Valley, also cultivates respected wet-processed coffee. The highest level is AAA.
Peru coffee beans can be a darker roast but do not need to be. Light or dark roast is dependent on the coffee roaster after the coffee has been grown. Peruvian coffee is well matched to both light & dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is because of the growing region & in part impactged by the method a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this type. The coffees that are less in acidity, such as Sumatran, are farmed at lower elevations.
Both coffee beans exhibit a simple yet balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee.
Arabica is the primary coffee grown:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica variety which is a tall & leggy low yield shrub but provides high qualities, usually quite sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee strain that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the rest are other types.
About 75% of the coffee cultivating area is at an elevation range of 1000–1800 m.
