Usually, it is a mildly acid cup, light-bodied but flavourful and aromatic. Peruvian beans are known as a good blender because of its pleasant but understated character. The Cuzco area, particularly the Urubamba Valley, also produces respected wet-processed coffee. The highest grade is AAA.
Peru coffee beans may be a dark roast but do not need to be. lighter or darker roast depends on the bean roaster after the coffee has been farmed. Peruvian coffee is well matched to both light & dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is because of the growing region and partly influenced by the method a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this type. The coffees that are lower in acidity, such as Sumatra, are grown at lower altitudes.
Both coffees have a simple & balanced flavour. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian beans.
Arabica is the predominant coffee farmed:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type which is a tall & leggy small yield tree but produces high qualities, generally very sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee plant that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the rest being of other types.
About 75 percent of the coffee growing area lies at an elevation range of 1,000–1,800 m.
