Generally, a mildly acid flavour, light-bodied but tasteful & aromatic. Peruvian coffee beans are thought of as a good blending coffee because of its nice but understated character. The Cuzco location, particularly the Urubamba Valley, also grows renound wet-processed coffee. The highest level is AAA.
Peru coffee beans can be a dark roast but does not need to be. lighter or darker roast depends on the bean roasting after the coffee has been farmed. Peruvian coffee is suited to both lighter and darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is in part due to the cultivating location & partly influenced by the method a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this type. The coffees that are lower in acidity, such as Sumatran, are cultivated at lower altitudes.
Both beans show a simple yet balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee.
Arabica is the dominant coffee grown:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica variety which is a tall & leggy small yield shrub but provides excellent qualities, typically quite sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee variety that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever discovered); and
- the rest being of other varieties.
About 75% of the coffee farming area is at an altitude range of 1000–1800 metres.
