Typically, a mildly acid taste, light-bodied but flavourful & aromatic. Peru coffee beans are considered a good blending coffee owing to its nice but understated characteristics. The Cuzco region, especially the Urubamba Valley, also cultivates respected wet-processed coffee. The best level is AAA.
Peru beans can be a darker roast but do not need to be. lighter or darker roast is dependent on the coffee roasting after the coffee has been produced. Peruvian coffee is suited to both light & dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is in part due to the farming region & in part impactged by the way a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this type. The coffees that are lower in acidity, such as Sumatra, are grown at lower altitudes.
Both coffee beans have a simple & balanced flavour. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity and does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee.
Arabica is the largest coffee grown:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica variety that is a tall and leggy low yield plant but provides great qualities, generally quite sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee variety that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the rest being of other varieties.
About 75% of the coffee growing area lies at an altitude range of 1,000–1800 metres.
