Generally, a mildly acid coffee, light-bodied but flavourful & aromatic. Peru coffee beans are considered a good blending coffee due to its pleasant but understated attributes. The Cuzco area, especially the Urubamba Valley, also cultivates respected wet-processed coffee. The best grade is AAA.
Peru coffee beans may be a darker roast but do not need to be. Light or dark roast is dependent on the bean roaster after the coffee has been grown. Peruvian coffee is well matched to both light and dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is partly due to the cultivating region & partly impactged by the way a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this type. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatran, are produced at lower elevations.
Both coffee beans show a simple and balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity and lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian beans.
Arabica is the dominant coffee farmed:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type that is a tall and leggy small yield tree but produces excellent qualities, typically quite sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee strain that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the remainder are other varieties.
About 75% of the coffee cultivation area lies at an elevation range of 1000–1,800 m.
