Typically, it is a mildly acid coffee, light bodied but tasteful & aromatic. Peruvian coffee are thought of as a good blending coffee due to its nice but understated characteristics. The Cuzco location, especially the Urubamba Valley, also grows renound wet-processed coffee. The best grade is AAA.
Peru beans may be a dark roast but do not need to be. Light or dark roast is dependent on the bean roaster after the coffee has been produced. Peruvian coffee is suited to both lighter and darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is because of the farming area and partly impactged from the method a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this category. The coffees that are less in acidity, such as Sumatran, are grown at lower altitudes.
Both coffee beans have a simple and balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian beans.
Arabica is the primary coffee farmed:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type which is a tall & leggy small yield tree but provides great qualities, usually very sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee strain that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the remainder are other types.
About 75 percent of the coffee cultivation area is at an elevation range of 1000–1,800 metres.
