Typically, a mildly acid flavour, light bodied but flavourful and aromatic. Peru beans are thought of as a good blending coffee due to its nice but understated character. The Cuzco area, especially the Urubamba Valley, also grows renound wet-processed coffee. The best grade is AAA.
Peruvian beans may be a dark roast but do not need to be. lighter or darker roast depends on the bean roasting after the coffee has been produced. Peruvian coffee is well matched to both lighter & darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is as a result of the growing location and partly impactged by the way a bean is processed & roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans falls into this type. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatra, are grown at lower elevations.
Both coffee beans have a simple & balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee.
Arabica is the dominant coffee crop:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica type which is a tall and leggy small yield tree but provides great qualities, typically quite sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee strain that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the remainder are other types.
About 75% of the coffee cultivation area is at an elevation range of 1000–1800 m.
