Usually, it is a mildly acid coffee, light-bodied but flavourful and aromatic. Peruvian coffee are thought of as a good blending coffee due to its pleasant but understated characteristics. The Cuzco region, especially the Urubamba Valley, also grows renound wet-processed coffee. The best level is AAA.
Peru beans may be a darker roast but do not need to be. Light or dark roast depends on the bean roaster after the coffee has been produced. Peruvian coffee is suited to both light & dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is as a result of the cultivating area & partly influenced by the method a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this category. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatran, are cultivated at lower elevations.
Both coffee beans have a simple and balanced flavour. Peruvian coffee is not as thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & lacks the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee.
Arabica is the largest coffee cultured:
- 70% of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica strain that is a tall & leggy low yield tree but produces great qualities, generally quite sweet & clean);
- 20 percent is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee tree that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the rest are other types.
About 75% of the coffee growing area lies at an elevation range of 1,000 to 1800 metres.
