Generally, it is a mildly acid flavour, light bodied but flavourful and aromatic. Peru coffee beans are known as a good blender owing to its pleasant but understated character. The Cuzco location, especially the Urubamba Valley, also produces respected wet-processed coffee. The best grade is AAA.
Peru coffee beans can be a darker roast but does not need to be. Light or dark roast is dependent on the coffee bean roaster after the coffee has been farmed. Peruvian coffee is suited to both light and dark roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is partly due to the farming area and in part impactged from the method a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this type. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatra, are produced at lower altitudes.
Both beans exhibit a simple & balanced flavour. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian coffee.
Arabica is the predominant coffee grown:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica variety which is a tall and leggy low yield shrub but provides great qualities, generally very sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee plant that was originally found in Brazil in 1937, thought to be the 1st naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the rest are other types.
About 75 percent of the coffee farming area is at an altitude range of 1,000 to 1800 metres.
