Usually, it is a mildly acid taste, light-bodied but flavourful and aromatic. Peruvian coffee beans are known as a good blending coffee because of its nice but understated characteristics. The Cuzco location, especially the Urubamba Valley, also produces respected wet-processed coffee. The highest level is AAA.
Peru coffee beans can be a darker roast but do not need to be. lighter or darker roast is dependent on the bean roasting after the coffee has been produced. Peruvian coffee is suited to both lighter & darker roasting.
The acidity of a coffee is in part due to the cultivating area & in part influenced from the way a bean is processed and roasted. Brazilian, Peruvian, Kenyan and Ethiopian beans are all in this category. The coffees that are reduced in acidity, such as Sumatra, are produced at lower elevations.
Both beans show a simple and balanced taste. Peruvian coffee is less thick as Colombian, instead with a medium mouthfeel. Peruvian coffee is also medium in acidity & does not have the aromatic quality of a Colombian beans.
Arabica is the predominant coffee grown:
- 70 percent of which is Typica (Typica is an original Arabica variety that is a tall and leggy small yield shrub but produces high qualities, generally very sweet & clean);
- 20% is Caturra (Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee tree that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever found); and
- the rest being of other types.
About 75 percent of the coffee cultivating area lies at an altitude range of 1,000–1,800 m.
