Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that originate from Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a decorated history of coffee bean farming, one that dates back numerous centuries ago. It is home to one of the most preferred species of coffee, Coffea Arabica, also known as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee, apparently, is known for its light mouthfeels & the winery taste & quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this area are commonly of greater acidity & have complex flavour notes.

The major reason behind the taste that comes and has been linked with Ethiopian coffee is the processing used. Ethiopian coffee beans are processed naturally; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans develop winery tomes, & they commonly have a higher acidity than coffee beans from other regions.

A medium roast will provide the best balance between body, flavours, & acidity for Ethiopian coffee beans. However, you can experiment a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small and may be finicky, that can make it difficult to roast them.

There are a wide range of Ethiopian coffee types. Ethiopian coffee is grown in specific locations in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil characteristics of these locations differ, which affects the taste of the coffee each location cultivates.

The coffee types are mostly marketed as the regions of their origin.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirgacheffe coffee is a washed, wet-processed coffee cultivated in & around a small town in south Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is at elevations inbetween 1700 & 2200 meters ASL. Such elevations qualify Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).

Such altitudes hinder the fast growth of coffee. Because the coffee plants grow at a slower rate, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also plays a large role; the fruit can develop a more robust flavour.

Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity and the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma might even have a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee varieties exhibit notes of citrus and tangerine.

Yirgacheffe coffee is considered to be the best coffee cultivated in the south region of Ethiopia and also holds its own against other coffee varieties from other areas.

Single-origin coffee is coffee that is farmed from a small and specific area in the world. Most coffee connoisseurs do believe that a single origin coffee is, in fact, superior to other types of coffee as it is purer and more stable in taste. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more desirable.

Yirga Cheffe Coffee is, in fact, single-origin as it is only produced & processed in the Yirga Cheffe origin. That is the reason why it has distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is where the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee shrub, comes from. Now, it is produced in many places across the globe, but Ethiopia still grows a lot of it. As mentioned before, Ethiopia grows 3 % of all the coffee globally, which is pretty significant.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is primarily grown on small farms situated in the Oromia region, formally known as Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee type farmed exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a large region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (along with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a lot of different flavour profiles, most of the coffee, especially from areas such as Sidamo & Limu, is complex and can prove strong, especially with nascent coffee connoisseurs.

This depends on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are consuming. The coffee {farmed|grown in some locations in Ethiopia will prove to be more acidic than others, so you have to check where the coffee is from. Apparently though, Ethiopian coffee shows mild acidity.

No, Ethiopian coffee doesn’t. Almost all of the Ethiopian coffee types are Coffee Arabica, that contains a coffee concentration of 1.5%. On the Contrary, Robusta, the strongest coffee beans, contains a caffeine percentage of 2.4.
