FAQs

Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are farmed in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a decorated history of coffee production, one that goes back numerous centuries ago. Ethiopia is home for one of the most well liked strains of coffee, Coffea Arabica, known as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee beans make up three percent of the world coffee production. This clearly exhibits the importance that the Ethiopian coffee farming areas have on global coffee consumption.

It is thought that, about 1000 years ago, a goatherd happened upon the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even the name is similar to Coffee.

Ethiopian coffee is known worldwide for the quality of flavour and the amount of perfection it has. That being said, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so good?

Ethiopian coffee, apparently, is known for its light mouthfeels and the winery flavour & quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this region are usually of greater acidity and have complex tasting notes.

The major cause of the taste that comes and has been associated with Ethiopian coffee is the process used. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Thus, the coffee beans exhibit winery tomes, and they usually have a greater acidity than coffee from other areas.

The medium roast will provide the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee. That being said, you have to experiment a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small and may be finicky, that makes it difficult to roast them.

There are a multitude of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is farmed in particular areas in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic and soil conditions of these locations are different, which changes the flavour of the coffee each location farms.

The coffee varieties are mostly marketed under the regions that they come from.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirgacheffe coffee is a washed, wet-processed coffee cultivated in & around a little town in south Ethiopia, called Yirgacheffe. The coffee is cultured at altitudes inbetween 1700 & 2,200 meters ASL. Such altitudes qualify Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly High growth (SHG).

Such altitudes hinder the rapid growth of coffee. Since the coffee plants grow at a slow pace, they have more time to soak in all the nutrients in the earth. With the local climate, the Yirga Cheffe also plays a huge influence; the fruit can develop a more robust flavour.

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity and the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. Sometimes, the aroma may even exhibit a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee varieties exhibit notes of citrus and tangerine.

Yirga Cheffe coffee is thought to be the best coffee produced in the southern region of Ethiopia and also holds its own against other coffee types from other areas.

Single origin coffee is coffee that is farmed from a small & specific area in the world. Many coffee connoisseurs do think that a single coffee origin is, in fact, better than other types of coffee because it is purer & more stable in taste. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more appealing.

Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single origin since it is only grown & processed in the Yirga Cheffe region. That is the reason why it shows distinctive notes, aromas, & the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is where the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee plant, comes from. Now, it is farmed in many parts across the globe, however Ethiopia still produces a lot of it. As stated earlier, Ethiopia farms three % of all the coffee globally, which is pretty big.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild and exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mainly cultivated on botique farms situated in the Oromia region, formally named Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee type cultured exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a large region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (also with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a range of different flavour varieties, a lot the coffee, especially from regions like Sidamo & Limu, is complex & can prove strong, especially with nascent coffee drinkers.

This depends on the variety of Ethiopian coffee you are consuming. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia will be more acidic than others, so you should check where the coffee is from. Apparently though, Ethiopian coffee shows mild acidity.

No, Ethiopian coffee doesn’t. Most of the Ethiopian coffee varieties are Coffee Arabica, which contains a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the Contrary, Robusta coffee, the strongest bean, contains a caffeine content of 2.4%. Therefore, Ethiopian coffee beans does not have more caffeine than other varieties from other areas in the world.
