FAQs
Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are farmed in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee farming, one that goes back numerous centuries ago. It is the origin to one of the most popular strains of coffee, Coffea Arabica, known as Arabica coffee.
Ethiopian coffee beans make up three percent of the world coffee farming. This clearly shows the importance that the Ethiopian coffee farming locations have on global coffee consumption.
It is believed that, about 1000 years ago, a goat herder happened upon the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the birth place of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even what it is called is similar to Coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is known all over the globe for the quality of flavour and the amount of perfection it comes with. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so great?
Ethiopian coffee, ostensibly, is known for its bright mouthfeels & the winery flavour and quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this region are usually of higher acidity & come with complex flavour notes.
The main reason behind the taste that comes and has been linked with Ethiopian coffee is the process utilised. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still attached to the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans develop winery tomes, and they typically have a greater acidity than coffee beans from other areas.
The medium roast will result in the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee beans. That being said, you can experiment a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & can be finicky, that makes it difficult to roast them.
There are a lot of Ethiopian coffee types. Ethiopian coffee is cultured in particular locations in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil conditions of these regions are different, which impacts the taste of the coffee each region farms.
The coffee types are mostly sold under the regions of their origin.
These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.
Yirga Cheffe coffee is a washed, wet-processed coffee farmed in & nearby to a little village in southern Ethiopia, called Yirgacheffe. The coffee is produced at altitudes of between 1,700 & 2,200 meters ASL. Such altitudes allow Yirga Cheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly High growth (SHG).
Such altitudes slow the rapid growth of coffee. Because the coffee plants grow at a slower rate, they have more time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirga Cheffe also contributes a huge role; the berries can develop a more robust flavour.
Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity and the clean and complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma may even have a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee varieties exhibit notes of citrus & tangerine.
Yirga Cheffe coffee is considered to be the best coffee farmed in the southern part of Ethiopia and also holds its own against other coffee types from other locations.
Single-origin coffee is coffee that comes from a small and specific area in the world. Most coffee connoisseurs do think that a single coffee origin is, in fact, superior to other varieties of coffee as it is purer and more stable in flavour. This exclusivity makes single-source coffee more desirable.
Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single origin because it is only cultured and prepared in the Yirga Cheffe area. That is the reason why it shows distinctive notes, aromas, & the feelings it induces.
Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the nation the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee plant, comes from. Now, it is cultivated in numerous countries across the globe, but Ethiopia still farms a lot of it. As stated before, Ethiopia produces 3 % of all the coffee globally, which is pretty significant.
Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mostly cultivated on botique farms situated in the Oromia area, formally called Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.
Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety farmed exclusively in the Sidamo.
Sidamo is a big region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (also with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.
Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.
The fruity flavours that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.
It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with many different taste profiles, a lot the coffee, particually from regions such as Sidamo and Limu, is complex & can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee drinkers.
This depends on the variety of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some locations in Ethiopia are more acidic than other types, so you have to check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee has mild acidity.
No, Ethiopian coffee beans doesn’t. Almost all of the Ethiopian coffee varieties are Coffee Arabica, which has a coffee concentration of 1.5%. On the other hand, Robusta, the strongest coffee beans, has a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Thus, Ethiopian coffee does not have more caffeine than other varieties from other places in the world.
