FAQs

Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that come from Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee production, one that dates back numerous centuries ago. Ethiopia is home for one of the most popular species of coffee, Coffea Arabica, commonly called as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee beans comprise three 5 of the world coffee production. This clearly shows the importance that the Ethiopian coffee production areas have on world coffee consumption.

It is thought that, about one thousand years ago, a goat herder stumbled upon the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the birth place of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even what it is called is similar to Coffee.

Ethiopian coffee is known all over the globe for the quality of flavour and the level of refinement it comes with. That being said, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so good?

Ethiopian coffee, apparently, is known for its bright mouthfeels and the winery flavour & quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this region are typical of greater acidity and come with complex flavour notes.

The main reason behind the flavour that comes and is linked with Ethiopian coffee is the processing used. Ethiopian coffee beans are processed naturally; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still attached to the coffee bean. Thus, the coffee beans show winery tomes, & they commonly have a higher acidity than coffee from other countries.

A medium roast will provide the best balance between body, flavours, & acidity for Ethiopian coffee. That being said, you have to try out a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & can be finicky, that makes it hard to roast them.

There are a wide range of Ethiopian coffee types. Ethiopian coffee is cultured in particular areas in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil characteristics of these places differ, this changes the taste of the coffee each area cultivates.

The coffee types are mainly sold under the regions that they come from.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirgacheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee grown in and nearby to a little village in southern Ethiopia, called Yirgacheffe. The coffee is grown at altitudes inbetween 1700 & 2,200 meters ASL. Such elevations allow Yirga Cheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).

Such altitudes slow down the fast growth of coffee. Since the coffee trees grow at a slower rate, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also plays a significant influence; the fruit can develop a more robust taste.

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity & the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma may even have a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee varieties display notes of citrus & tangerine.

Yirgacheffe coffee is said to be the best coffee farmed in the southern areas of Ethiopia and also holds its own alongside other coffee types from other regions.

Single-origin coffee is coffee that comes from a little & specific area in the world. Most coffee connoisseurs do insist that a single origin coffee is, in fact, superior to other types of coffee as it is purer & more stable in flavour. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more desirable.

Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single origin because it is only produced & prepared in the Yirgacheffe area. That is the reason why it shows distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is where the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee tree, comes from. Now, it is cultured in many areas across the globe, but Ethiopia still produces a lot of it. As stated earlier, Ethiopia grows 3 % of all the coffee globally, which is pretty significant.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild and exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is primarily grown on small farms found in the Oromia region, formally called Harrar. Therefore, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety cultured exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a large region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (along with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a lot of different taste profiles, a lot the coffee, especially from places such as Sidamo and Limu, is complex and can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee drinkers.

This will depend on the variety of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia can be more acidic than others, so it is good to check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee has mild acidity.

No, Ethiopian coffee beans does not. Almost all of the Ethiopian coffee varieties are Coffee Arabica, which contains a coffee concentration of 1.5%. On the Contrary, Robusta, the strongest bean, has a caffeine content of 2.4%. Therefore, Ethiopian coffee does not contain more caffeine than other varieties from different places in the world.

Merricks was part of the Parish of Balnarring and is believed to be named after an early cattle station owner. It was first settled in 1865 by John Caldwell who built “Koonoona” a wattle cottage. Unlike Balnarring and Hastings Merricks’s early settlers preferred running cattle and sheep to growing orchards. In 1902 a post office opened which was served by Cobb and Co from Crib Point; this closed in 1979. In 1920 a co-operative cool store was built in nearby Red Hill and from 1921 until 1953 a railway from Bittern to Red Hill travelled through Merricks although it received little use after its initial decade of service. A small primary school was also opened in 1921 closing in 1951 along with several others in the region when Red Hill Consolidated School commenced.
