FAQs

Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that come from Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee production, one that dates back numerous centuries ago. It is home to one of the most well liked species of coffee, Coffea Arabica, also known as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee beans make up 3 percent of the world coffee production. This clearly shows the importance that the Ethiopian coffee farming locations have on global coffee consumption.

It is believed that, about 1000 years ago, a goat herder happened upon the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even what it is called is similar to Coffee.

Ethiopian coffee is known worldwide for the quality of taste & the amount of refinement it comes with. That being said, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so great?

Ethiopian coffee, primarily, is known for its bright mouthfeels & the winery flavour & quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this area are typical of higher acidity and have complex tasting notes.

The main cause of the taste that comes & is associated with Ethiopian coffee is the process utilised. Ethiopian coffee beans are processed naturally; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Thus, the coffee beans get winery tomes, and they usually have a greater acidity than coffee from other regions.

The medium roast can often provide the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee beans. However, you have to try out a bit to find that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & can be finicky, that can make it difficult to roast them.

There are a wide range of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is cultured in particular areas in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil conditions of these places differ, this changes the flavour of the coffee each area farms.

The coffee varieties are mostly marketed as the areas that they come from.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirgacheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee grown in and around a small village in southern Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is farmed at elevations of between 1700 & 2200 meters above sea level. Such altitudes qualify Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).

Such altitudes slow the rapid growth of coffee. Since the coffee trees grow at a slower pace, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also plays a significant influence; the berries can develop a more robust taste.

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity & the clean and complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma can even exhibit a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee types show notes of citrus and tangerine.

Yirgacheffe coffee is said to be the best coffee produced in the southern areas of Ethiopia & also holds its own alongside other coffee varieties from other regions.

Single-origin coffee is coffee that is cultivated from a little and particular location in the world. Many coffee connoisseurs do believe that a single origin coffee is, in fact, better than other varieties of coffee as it is purer & more consistent in flavour. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more appealing.

Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single origin since it is only cultivated & prepared in the Yirgacheffe origin. That is the reason why it shows distinctive notes, aromas, & the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the country the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee shrub, originates from. Now, it is cultivated in numerous places worldwide, however Ethiopia still produces a lot of it. As mentioned before, Ethiopia grows 3 % of all the coffee in the world, which is pretty significant.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mainly farmed on botique farms found in the Oromia region, formally known as Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety farmed exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a large region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee areas in Ethiopia (also with Harrar and Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a range of different taste varieties, a lot the coffee, particually from places such as Sidamo & Limu, is complex and can prove strong, especially with nascent coffee connoisseurs.

This depends on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia will prove to be more acidic than others, so you have to check where the coffee is from. Apparently though, Ethiopian coffee has mild acidity.

No, it doesn’t. The vast majority of the Ethiopian coffee types are Arabica, that contains a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the Contrary, Robusta, the strongest bean, contains a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Therefore, Ethiopian beans doesn’t contain more caffeine than other varieties from other places in the world.
