FAQs
Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are cultivated in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee bean farming, one that dates back numerous centuries ago. Ethiopia is home to one of the most popular types of coffee, Coffea Arabica, known as Arabica coffee.
Ethiopian coffee beans constitute 3 percent of the global coffee farming. This clearly shows the influence that the Ethiopian coffee production regions have on world coffee consumption.
It is thought that, about 1000 years ago, a goat herder happened upon the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even the name is like Coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is known all over the world for the quality of flavour & the amount of refinement it has. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so great?
Ethiopian coffee, apparently, is known for its light mouthfeels and the winery flavour & quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this area are typical of higher acidity and have complex flavour notes.
The primary cause of the taste that comes and is linked with Ethiopian coffee is the process utilised. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Thus, the coffee beans get winery tomes, & they typically have a greater acidity than coffee from other countries.
A medium roast will give the best balance between body, flavours, & acidity for Ethiopian coffee. However, you can experiment a bit to find that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & may be finicky, which makes it hard to roast them.
There are a multitude of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is farmed in particular locations in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil characteristics of these areas are different, this affects the taste of the coffee each location cultivates.
The coffee varieties are mainly sold under the regions that they come from.
These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.
Yirga Cheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee grown in and around a small village in southern Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is farmed at altitudes inbetween 1,700 & 2,200 meters ASL. Such elevations qualify Yirga Cheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).
Such altitudes slow the rapid growth of coffee. Because the coffee plants grow at a slower speed, they have more time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirga Cheffe also plays a large influence; the fruit can develop a more robust taste.
Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity & the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. Sometimes, the aroma might even have a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee varieties display notes of citrus and tangerine.
Yirga Cheffe coffee is considered to be the best coffee farmed in the south part of Ethiopia and also holds its own alongside other coffee varieties from other regions.
Single origin coffee is coffee that is grown from a small and particular location in the world. Most coffee connoisseurs do believe that a single origin coffee is, in fact, superior to other varieties of coffee as it is purer & more consistent in flavour. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more desirable.
Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single-origin since it is only cultured and processed in the Yirga Cheffe area. Which is the reason why it has distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.
Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the country the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee shrub, originates from. Now, it is cultivated in many regions worldwide, however Ethiopia still grows a lot of it. As stated before, Ethiopia farms three percent of all the coffee in the world, which is pretty significant.
Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild and exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is primarily farmed on small farms situated in the Oromia area, formally known as Harrar. Therefore, the coffee is eponymous.
Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee type farmed exclusively in the Sidamo.
Sidamo is a large area in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee areas in Ethiopia (along with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.
Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.
The fruity flavours that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.
It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a lot of different taste varieties, most of the coffee, particually from regions such as Sidamo and Limu, is complex & can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee connoisseurs.
This will depend on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are consuming. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia will prove to be more acidic than others, so you have to check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee is of mild acidity.
No, it doesn’t. The vast majority of the Ethiopian coffee types are Arabica, which has a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the Contrary, Robusta, the strongest bean, has a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Thus, Ethiopian beans doesn’t contain more caffeine than other varieties from different regions in the world.
