FAQs

Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that originate from Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee farming, one that goes back numerous centuries ago. It is the origin to one of the most preferred types of coffee, Coffea Arabica, commonly called as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee beans comprise 3 5 of the world coffee market. This clearly shows the importance that the Ethiopian coffee growing regions have on global coffee consumption.

It is believed that, about 1000 years ago, a goat herder stumbled on the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even what it is called is like Coffee.

Ethiopian coffee is known worldwide for the quality of taste and the level of refinement it comes with. That being said, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so great?

Ethiopian coffee, ostensibly, is known for its bright mouthfeels & the winery taste and quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this region are commonly of higher acidity and have complex tasting notes.

The major reason behind the taste that comes and is associated with Ethiopian coffee is the processing utilised. Ethiopian coffee beans are processed naturally; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still attached to the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans get winery tomes, and they usually have a higher acidity than coffee from other areas.

The medium roast will provide the best balance between body, flavours, & acidity for Ethiopian coffee. However, you have to try out a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & can be finicky, which makes it hard to roast them.

There are a myriad of Ethiopian coffee types. Ethiopian coffee is farmed in specific regions in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic and soil conditions of these areas are different, this affects the taste of the coffee each location cultivates.

The coffee varieties are mainly marketed under the locations that they are from.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirga Cheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee grown in & nearby to a small town in south Ethiopia, called Yirgacheffe. The coffee is cultivated at altitudes inbetween 1,700 & 2200 meters ASL. Such elevations allow Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).

Such elevations reduce the rapid growth of coffee. Since the coffee trees grow at a slower rate, they have more time to soak in all the nutrients in the earth. With the local climate, the Yirga Cheffe also plays a important role; the berries can develop a more robust taste.

Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its bright acidity and the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma may even show a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee varieties show notes of citrus and tangerine.

Yirga Cheffe coffee is thought to be the best coffee cultivated in the south areas of Ethiopia & also holds its own alongside other coffee types from other regions.

Single-origin coffee is coffee that is farmed from a small and specific region in the world. Most coffee lovers do insist that a single coffee origin is, in fact, better than other types of coffee as it is purer & more consistent in flavour. This exclusivity makes single-source coffee more favouable.

Yirga Cheffe Coffee is, in fact, single source as it is only cultured and processed in the Yirgacheffe origin. That is the reason why it shows distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the nation the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee shrub, comes from. Now, it is cultured in many places across the globe, however Ethiopia still farms a lot of it. As stated earlier, Ethiopia farms three % of all the coffee in the world, which is pretty big.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild and exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is primarily cultivated on small farms located in the Oromia region, formally known as Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety farmed exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a large area in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (also with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a range of different taste varieties, most of the coffee, especially from places like Sidamo & Limu, is complex & can prove strong, especially with nascent coffee connoisseurs.

This depends on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are consuming. The coffee {farmed|grown in some locations in Ethiopia will be more acidic than others, so it is good to check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee is of mild acidity.

No, it does not. Most of the Ethiopian coffee types are Arabica, that has a coffee concentration of 1.5%. On the other hand, Robusta coffee, the strongest coffee beans, contains a caffeine content of 2.4%. Therefore, Ethiopian coffee beans doesn’t have more caffeine than other varieties from different places in the world.
