FAQs
Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that come from Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a decorated history of coffee bean cultivation, one that dates back a number of centuries ago. It is the origin to one of the most well liked types of coffee, Coffea Arabica, often termed as Arabica coffee.
Ethiopian coffee beans constitute 3 percent of the global coffee production. This clearly shows the importance that the Ethiopian coffee growing regions have on global coffee consumption.
It is believed that, about one thousand years ago, a goatherd stumbled upon the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even what it is called is similar to Coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is known all over the globe for the quality of flavour and the amount of perfection it comes with. That being said, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so great?
Ethiopian coffee, primarily, is known for its light mouthfeels and the winery taste and quality it has. The coffee beans from this area are commonly of greater acidity & come with complex flavour notes.
The major reason behind the flavour that comes and is linked with Ethiopian coffee is the process used. Ethiopian coffee beans are processed naturally; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still attached to the coffee bean. Thus, the coffee beans exhibit winery tomes, and they commonly have a greater acidity than coffee beans from other countries.
A medium roast will provide the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee. That being said, you can try out a bit to find that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & can be finicky, which makes it difficult to roast them.
There are a myriad of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is cultivated in specific locations in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil characteristics of these places are different, this affects the flavour of the coffee each location cultures.
The coffee varieties are mostly marketed as the locations that they are from.
These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.
Yirga Cheffe coffee is a washed, wet-processed coffee grown in & around a small town in south Ethiopia, called Yirgacheffe. The coffee is cultivated at altitudes of between 1700 & 2200 meters ASL. Such altitudes qualify Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).
Such altitudes hinder the rapid growth of coffee. Because the coffee plants grow at a slower pace, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the earth. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also contributes a significant role; the berries can develop a more robust flavour.
Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its bright acidity and the clean and complex floral notes in its aroma. Sometimes, the aroma may even show a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee types display notes of citrus & tangerine.
Yirga Cheffe coffee is considered to be the best coffee grown in the southern areas of Ethiopia & also holds its own against other coffee varieties from other locations.
Single origin coffee is coffee that comes from a small and specific area in the world. Many coffee connoisseurs do insist that a single coffee origin is, in fact, better than other types of coffee as it is purer and more homogenous in flavour. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more desirable.
Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single origin since it is only grown & processed in the Yirga Cheffe area. Which is the reason why it has distinctive notes, aromas, & the feelings it induces.
Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the nation the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee tree, comes from. Now, it is produced in numerous parts worldwide, however Ethiopia still farms a lot of it. As stated before, Ethiopia produces 3 % of all the coffee globally, which is pretty significant.
Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is primarily cultivated on small farms found in the Oromia area, formally called Harrar. Therefore, the coffee is eponymous.
Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety produced exclusively in the Sidamo.
Sidamo is a big area in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee areas in Ethiopia (along with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.
Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.
The fruity flavours that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.
It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with so many different flavour varieties, most of the coffee, especially from areas like Sidamo & Limu, is complex & can prove strong, especially with nascent coffee drinkers.
This depends on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are consuming. The coffee {farmed|grown in some locations in Ethiopia will be more acidic than others, so you have to check where the coffee is from. Apparently though, Ethiopian coffee has mild acidity.
No, Ethiopian coffee doesn’t. Almost all of the Ethiopian coffee varieties are Arabica, which contains a coffee concentration of 1.5%. On the other hand, Robusta, the strongest bean, contains a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Thus, Ethiopian coffee beans doesn’t have more caffeine than other types from other areas in the world.
