FAQs
Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are farmed in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee production, one that dates back numerous centuries ago. Ethiopia is the origin to one of the most preferred types of coffee, Coffea Arabica, often termed as Arabica coffee.
Ethiopian coffee beans comprise three 5 of the world coffee production. This clearly shows the importance that the Ethiopian coffee production locations have on global coffee consumption.
It is believed that, about one thousand years ago, a goatherd happened upon the coffee plant in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even the name is similar to Coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is known all over the globe for the quality of taste & the amount of perfection it has. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so great?
Ethiopian coffee, primarily, is known for its bright mouthfeels and the winery flavour and quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this region are usually of higher acidity & come with complex flavour notes.
The main cause of the taste that comes & has been linked with Ethiopian coffee is the process used. Ethiopian coffee beans are processed naturally; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans develop winery tomes, & they typically have a greater acidity than coffee beans from other areas.
A medium roast can often provide the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee beans. However, you can experiment a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small and can be finicky, that can make it difficult to roast them.
There are a wide range of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is cultured in specific areas in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic and soil characteristics of these regions are different, this changes the taste of the coffee each area cultivates.
The coffee types are mainly sold as the locations that they come from.
These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.
Yirga Cheffe coffee is a washed, wet-processed coffee cultivated in and nearby to a small town in south Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is at altitudes of between 1700 and 2200 meters ASL. Such altitudes qualify Yirga Cheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).
Such altitudes hinder the fast growth of coffee. Since the coffee plants grow at a reduced pace, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the earth. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also plays a large role; the berries can develop a more robust taste.
Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity and the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma may even exhibit a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee types display notes of citrus and tangerine.
Yirgacheffe coffee is thought to be the best coffee produced in the south part of Ethiopia and also holds its own alongside other coffee varieties from other locations.
Single-origin coffee is coffee that is grown from a small and particular location in the world. Many coffee connoisseurs do think that a single origin coffee is, in fact, superior to other varieties of coffee because it is purer and more homogenous in flavour. This exclusivity makes single-source coffee more appealing.
Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single origin as it is only cultivated & prepared in the Yirgacheffe area. That is the reason why it shows distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.
Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is where the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee plant, comes from. Now, it is cultivated in numerous countries across the globe, but Ethiopia still produces a lot of it. As stated before, Ethiopia produces 3 percent of all the coffee in the world, which is pretty big.
Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mostly farmed on botique farms found in the Oromia region, formally named Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.
Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee type cultured exclusively in the Sidamo.
Sidamo is a big region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee areas in Ethiopia (also with Harrar and Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.
Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.
The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.
It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with many different flavour profiles, a lot the coffee, especially from regions such as Sidamo and Limu, is complex and can prove strong, especially with nascent coffee lovers.
This will depend on the variety of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia can be more acidic than others, so you have to check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee has mild acidity.
No, Ethiopian coffee beans does not. Almost all of the Ethiopian coffee types are Coffee Arabica, that contains a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the other hand, Robusta, the strongest bean, contains a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Thus, Ethiopian beans doesn’t have more caffeine than other types from different places in the world.
