FAQs

Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that originate from Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee bean cultivation, one that dates back a number of centuries ago. It is the origin to one of the most preferred species of coffee, Coffea Arabica, known as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee beans constitute 3 5 of the global coffee farming. This clearly shows the influence that the Ethiopian coffee farming locations have on global coffee consumption.

It is believed that, about one thousand years ago, a goatherd happened on the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the birth place of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even what it is called is like Coffee.

Ethiopian coffee is known worldwide for the quality of flavour & the amount of perfection it has. That being said, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so good?

Ethiopian coffee, ostensibly, is known for its bright mouthfeels & the winery flavour and quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this region are typical of greater acidity & come with complex tasting notes.

The major cause of the flavour that comes and has been linked with Ethiopian coffee is the process used. Ethiopian coffee beans are processed naturally; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still attached to the coffee bean. Thus, the coffee beans develop winery tomes, and they usually have a greater acidity than coffee from other areas.

A medium roasting will result in the best balance between body, flavours, & acidity for Ethiopian coffee. However, you can experiment a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & may be finicky, that makes it hard to roast them.

There are a lot of Ethiopian coffee types. Ethiopian coffee is cultivated in particular locations in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil conditions of these locations differ, this affects the flavour of the coffee each location cultures.

The coffee types are mainly sold as the locations that they come from.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirga Cheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee farmed in and nearby to a little village in southern Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is grown at altitudes inbetween 1,700 and 2,200 meters ASL. Such altitudes qualify Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).

Such altitudes reduce the fast growth of coffee. Since the coffee trees grow at a slow speed, they have more time to soak in all the nutrients in the earth. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also plays a large role; the fruit can develop a more robust flavour.

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity & the clean and complex floral notes in its aroma. Sometimes, the aroma can even show a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee varieties exhibit notes of citrus and tangerine.

Yirgacheffe coffee is considered to be the best coffee produced in the southern areas of Ethiopia and also holds its own against other coffee types from other areas.

Single origin coffee is coffee that is farmed from a small and particular location in the world. Many coffee connoisseurs do think that a single coffee origin is, in fact, superior to other types of coffee as it is purer & more consistent in flavour. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more favouable.

Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single origin because it is only cultivated and processed in the Yirgacheffe area. That is the reason why it exhibits distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the country the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee plant, comes from. Now, it is cultivated in many countries worldwide, but Ethiopia still grows a lot of it. As mentioned before, Ethiopia grows three % of all the coffee globally, which is pretty significant.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mainly grown on little farms situated in the Oromia area, formally called Harrar. Therefore, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety produced exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a large region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee areas in Ethiopia (along with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with many different flavour profiles, most of the coffee, especially from areas like Sidamo and Limu, is complex & can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee drinkers.

This will depend on the variety of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some locations in Ethiopia are more acidic than others, so you should check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee is of mild acidity.

No, it does not. Most of the Ethiopian coffee types are Arabica, that contains a coffee concentration of 1.5%. On the Contrary, Robusta coffee, the strongest coffee beans, has a caffeine content of 2.4%. Thus, Ethiopian coffee doesn’t have more caffeine than other types from different locations in the world.
