FAQs
Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that come from Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee bean cultivation, one that goes back numerous centuries ago. Ethiopia is home for one of the most well liked strains of coffee, Coffea Arabica, commonly called as Arabica coffee.
Ethiopian coffee beans constitute three percent of the global coffee production. This clearly shows the influence that the Ethiopian coffee cultivation regions have on world coffee consumption.
It is thought that, about one thousand years ago, a goat herder happened upon the coffee plant in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even the name is like Coffee.
Ethiopian coffee is known all over the world for the quality of taste & the amount of perfection it has. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so good?
Ethiopian coffee, ostensibly, is known for its bright mouthfeels & the winery flavour and quality it has. The coffee beans from this region are usually of higher acidity and come with complex flavour notes.
The main reason behind the flavour that comes & is linked with Ethiopian coffee is the processing used. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still attached to the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans get winery tomes, and they usually have a greater acidity than coffee from other areas.
A medium roasting will often give the best balance between body, flavours, & acidity for Ethiopian coffee. That being said, you have to experiment a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small and can be finicky, which makes it difficult to roast them.
There are a wide range of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is cultivated in specific regions in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil conditions of these areas differ, this affects the taste of the coffee each place cultures.
The coffee types are mostly sold under the locations that they come from.
These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.
Yirgacheffe coffee is a washed, wet-processed coffee grown in and around a little town in southern Ethiopia, called Yirgacheffe. The coffee is farmed at elevations inbetween 1,700 & 2,200 meters ASL. Such altitudes qualify Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly High growth (SHG).
Such altitudes slow down the rapid growth of coffee. Because the coffee trees grow at a reduced speed, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirga Cheffe also plays a huge influence; the berries can develop a more robust taste.
Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its bright acidity & the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma might even exhibit a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee types have notes of citrus & tangerine.
Yirgacheffe coffee is said to be the best coffee cultivated in the south region of Ethiopia & also holds its own against other coffee varieties from other locations.
Single origin coffee is coffee that is grown from a little & particular area in the world. Many coffee lovers do insist that a single origin coffee is, in fact, superior to other types of coffee because it is purer & more consistent in flavour. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more desirable.
Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single source since it is only produced & prepared in the Yirga Cheffe region. Which is the reason why it has distinctive notes, aromas, and the feelings it induces.
Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is where the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee tree, comes from. Now, it is cultured in numerous parts worldwide, but Ethiopia still produces a lot of it. As stated earlier, Ethiopia produces 3 percent of all the coffee in the world, which is pretty big.
Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is primarily farmed on botique farms situated in the Oromia area, formally called Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.
Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety cultured exclusively in the Sidamo.
Sidamo is a big region in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (also with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.
Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.
The fruity tastes that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.
It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a range of different taste varieties, most of the coffee, especially from regions like Sidamo and Limu, is complex and can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee drinkers.
This depends on the variety of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia are more acidic than other types, so you have to check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee is of mild acidity.
No, it doesn’t. Most of the Ethiopian coffee types are Coffee Arabica, which contains a coffee percentage of 1.5. On the Contrary, Robusta coffee, the strongest coffee, contains a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Therefore, Ethiopian beans doesn’t contain more caffeine than other varieties from other regions in the world.
