FAQs

Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that are grown in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a decorated history of coffee farming, one that goes back a number of centuries ago. It is the origin to one of the most well liked species of coffee, Coffea Arabica, known as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee beans comprise three 5 of the global coffee farming. This clearly shows the influence that the Ethiopian coffee growing regions have on global coffee consumption.

It is thought that, about one thousand years ago, a goatherd stumbled on the coffee plant in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even what it is called is similar to Coffee.

Ethiopian coffee is known worldwide for the quality of taste & the amount of refinement it has. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so great?

Ethiopian coffee, primarily, is known for its light mouthfeels and the winery taste and quality it comes with. The coffee beans from this region are commonly of higher acidity and come with complex flavour notes.

The primary cause of the taste that comes and is associated with Ethiopian coffee is the process used. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still attached to the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans develop winery tomes, and they typically have a greater acidity than coffee beans from other countries.

The medium roasting will often provide the best balance between body, flavours, & acidity for Ethiopian coffee. That being said, you have to experiment a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & can be finicky, which makes it hard to roast them.

There are a lot of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is grown in particular locations in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic & soil characteristics of these locations are different, which impacts the taste of the coffee each area cultivates.

The coffee varieties are mostly sold under the locations that they are from.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirgacheffe coffee is a washed, wet-processed coffee grown in and around a small town in southern Ethiopia, called Yirgacheffe. The coffee is at elevations inbetween 1700 & 2,200 meters above sea level. Such altitudes allow Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly High growth (SHG).

Such altitudes slow down the fast growth of coffee. Since the coffee trees grow at a reduced rate, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also plays a significant influence; the fruit can develop a more robust flavour.

Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its bright acidity & the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. Sometimes, the aroma can even have a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee types exhibit notes of citrus and tangerine.

Yirgacheffe coffee is said to be the best coffee grown in the southern part of Ethiopia and also holds its own against other coffee types from other locations.

Single origin coffee is coffee that is cultivated from a little & specific area in the world. Most coffee connoisseurs do insist that a single coffee origin is, in fact, superior to other varieties of coffee as it is purer and more homogenous in flavour. This exclusivity makes single-source coffee more desirable.

Yirga Cheffe Coffee is, in fact, single-origin since it is only cultivated and processed in the Yirga Cheffe region. Which is the reason why it has distinctive notes, aromas, & the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is where the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee shrub, comes from. Now, it is grown in many areas worldwide, however Ethiopia still farms a lot of it. As mentioned before, Ethiopia grows 3 percent of all the coffee globally, which is pretty significant.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild and exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mostly grown on small farms located in the Oromia region, formally known as Harrar. Therefore, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee type cultured exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a big area in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (along with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity flavours that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a range of different flavour profiles, most of the coffee, particually from regions like Sidamo and Limu, is complex & can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee connoisseurs.

This depends on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are consuming. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia will prove to be more acidic than othervarieties, so you should check where the coffee is from. Apparently though, Ethiopian coffee is of mild acidity.

No, it doesn’t. The vast majority of the Ethiopian coffee types are Coffee Arabica, that contains a coffee concentration of 1.5%. On the Contrary, Robusta coffee, the strongest coffee beans, contains a caffeine content of 2.4%. Therefore, Ethiopian coffee doesn’t have more caffeine than other types from different areas in the world.
