FAQs

Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that originate from Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee bean production, one that goes back numerous centuries ago. It is home to one of the most preferred species of coffee, Coffea Arabica, known as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee beans total three percent of the global coffee farming. This clearly shows the importance that the Ethiopian coffee farming regions have on world coffee consumption.

It is believed that, about one thousand years ago, a goat herder happened on the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the origin of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even what it is called is similar to Coffee.

Ethiopian coffee is known worldwide for the quality of taste and the amount of perfection it has. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so good?

Ethiopian coffee, apparently, is known for its bright mouthfeels & the winery flavour and quality it has. The coffee beans from this region are usually of higher acidity and have complex tasting notes.

The major cause of the flavour that comes & is associated with Ethiopian coffee is the processing utilised. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Therefore, the coffee beans develop winery tomes, & they usually have a greater acidity than coffee beans from other countries.

The medium roasting will result in the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee. That being said, you have to try out a bit to get that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small and may be finicky, which makes it hard to roast them.

There are a multitude of Ethiopian coffee types. Ethiopian coffee is cultured in specific locations in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic and soil characteristics of these locations differ, this impacts the taste of the coffee each region produces.

The coffee varieties are mainly sold under the locations that they come from.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirga Cheffe coffee is a cleaned, wet-processed coffee cultivated in and nearby to a little town in south Ethiopia, named Yirgacheffe. The coffee is at elevations of between 1700 and 2,200 meters above sea level. Such elevations allow Yirgacheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).

Such altitudes reduce the rapid growth of coffee. Since the coffee trees grow at a slow pace, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirga Cheffe also plays a significant influence; the berries can develop a more robust flavour.

Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its bright acidity and the clean & complex floral notes in its aroma. At times, the aroma can even have a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee types have notes of citrus & tangerine.

Yirgacheffe coffee is said to be the best coffee farmed in the south part of Ethiopia and also holds its own against other coffee types from other locations.

Single origin coffee is coffee that is farmed from a small & specific location in the world. Many coffee lovers do think that a single coffee origin is, in fact, superior to other varieties of coffee because it is purer and more stable in flavour. This exclusivity makes single-source coffee more appealing.

Yirga Cheffe Coffee is, in fact, single origin because it is only produced & prepared in the Yirgacheffe origin. That is the reason why it shows distinctive notes, aromas, & the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is the country the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee plant, originates from. Now, it is grown in numerous regions across the globe, but Ethiopia still farms a lot of it. As stated before, Ethiopia grows 3 percent of all the coffee in the world, which is pretty big.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is primarily produced on small farms situated in the Oromia area, formally known as Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety grown exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a big area in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee regions in Ethiopia (also with Harrar & Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity flavours that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with so many different flavour profiles, a lot the coffee, particually from areas such as Sidamo and Limu, is complex and can prove strong, particually with nascent coffee drinkers.

This will depend on the variety of Ethiopian coffee you are drinking. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia will prove to be more acidic than othervarieties, so you have to check where the coffee is from. Apparently though, Ethiopian coffee shows mild acidity.

No, Ethiopian coffee does not. The vast majority of the Ethiopian coffee varieties are Arabica, which contains a coffee concentration of 1.5%. On the Contrary, Robusta coffee, the strongest bean, has a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Therefore, Ethiopian beans doesn’t contain more caffeine than other varieties from other areas in the world.
