FAQs

Ethiopian coffee beans are coffee beans that originate from Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a long history of coffee bean production, one that goes back numerous centuries ago. It is home to one of the most preferred types of coffee, Coffea Arabica, known as Arabica coffee.

Ethiopian coffee beans total 3 5 of the world coffee farming. This clearly exhibits the importance that the Ethiopian coffee production locations have on global coffee consumption.

It is believed that, about one thousand years ago, a goat herder stumbled upon the coffee tree in Kaffa. Thus, the birth place of coffee in Ethiopia is in Kaffa. Even what it is called is similar to Coffee.

Ethiopian coffee is known all over the world for the quality of taste and the level of refinement it comes with. However, why does Ethiopian coffee taste so good?

Ethiopian coffee, primarily, is known for its light mouthfeels & the winery flavour and quality it has. The coffee beans from this area are typical of higher acidity and have complex flavour notes.

The primary reason behind the flavour that comes & has been associated with Ethiopian coffee is the process used. Ethiopian coffee beans are naturally processed; they are dried while the cherry fruit is still on the coffee bean. Thus, the coffee beans develop winery tomes, & they typically have a higher acidity than coffee beans from other countries.

The medium roasting will provide the best balance between body, flavours, and acidity for Ethiopian coffee beans. That being said, you can experiment a bit to find that perfect roast since Ethiopian coffee beans are small & may be finicky, that can make it difficult to roast them.

There are a lot of Ethiopian coffee varieties. Ethiopian coffee is grown in particular areas in the country; Harar, Limu, and Yirgacheffe. The climatic and soil characteristics of these places differ, which affects the flavour of the coffee each location produces.

The coffee varieties are mainly sold under the locations of their origin.

These coffee types are Sidamo, Harar, and Genika.

Yirgacheffe coffee is a washed, wet-processed coffee cultivated in & around a little town in southern Ethiopia, called Yirgacheffe. The coffee is farmed at altitudes of between 1,700 and 2200 meters above sea level. Such altitudes allow Yirga Cheffe coffee to be classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB).

Such altitudes hinder the fast growth of coffee. Since the coffee trees grow at a reduced rate, they have increased time to soak in all the nutrients in the soil. With the local climate, the Yirgacheffe also contributes a significant influence; the fruit can develop a more robust taste.

Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee is characterized by its light acidity & the clean and complex floral notes in its aroma. Sometimes, the aroma may even show a hint of coconut. Some Ethiopian Yirga Cheffe coffee varieties display notes of citrus & tangerine.

Yirgacheffe coffee is considered to be the best coffee produced in the south areas of Ethiopia & also holds its own alongside other coffee varieties from other locations.

Single origin coffee is coffee that is grown from a small & specific region in the world. Many coffee connoisseurs do believe that a single coffee origin is, in fact, superior to other types of coffee as it is purer & more consistent in taste. This exclusivity makes single origin coffee more favouable.

Yirgacheffe Coffee is, in fact, single-origin as it is only cultured & prepared in the Yirgacheffe region. Which is the reason why it shows distinctive notes, aromas, & the feelings it induces.

Ethiopian coffee is Arabica. Ethiopia is where the coffee Arabica, which is the coffee shrub, comes from. Now, it is grown in numerous regions worldwide, however Ethiopia still grows a lot of it. As mentioned before, Ethiopia farms 3 % of all the coffee globally, which is pretty significant.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild & exotic naturally processed variety of Arabica coffee. It is mostly cultivated on botique farms situated in the Oromia area, formally called Harrar. Thus, the coffee is eponymous.

Sidamo coffee is an Ethiopian coffee variety farmed exclusively in the Sidamo.

Sidamo is a large area in the fertile highlands in the Rift Valley. Sidamo is one of three trademarked coffee areas in Ethiopia (along with Harrar and Yirgacheffe). Sidamo coffee beans are known for their rich, full body and crisp acidity. They also have floral and citrus notes.

Ethiopian coffee has a mild and pleasant acidity, as well as a heavy winery and floral taste. The coffee also has a bright fruited taste. One is left with notes of blueberry, jasmine, and bergamot in the aftertaste.

The fruity flavours that characterise Ethiopian coffee can come across as sourness. This fact is proliferated when you switch to light coffee, like Ethiopian coffee, and you are used to the darker roasts.

It is strong. Even though Ethiopian coffee is so diverse, with a range of different flavour varieties, a lot the coffee, particually from areas like Sidamo & Limu, is complex & can prove strong, especially with nascent coffee lovers.

This depends on the type of Ethiopian coffee you are consuming. The coffee {farmed|grown in some areas in Ethiopia can be more acidic than others, so you have to check where the coffee is from. Ostensibly though, Ethiopian coffee is of mild acidity.

No, it doesn’t. The vast majority of the Ethiopian coffee varieties are Coffee Arabica, that contains a coffee concentration of 1.5%. On the other hand, Robusta, the strongest coffee beans, has a caffeine percentage of 2.4. Therefore, Ethiopian beans doesn’t contain more caffeine than other types from other locations in the world.
